I finally cried

I had a call from the chaplin at the hospital. After talking to me for several minutes, she asked me if she could say a prayer for us. I don't consider myself much of a religious man, but I agreed. When she finished, I had tears running down both cheeks. Through her words, I could see our whole lives together, up to and including our current state. It was very emotional for me, and after 4 1/2 years of no tears, it came out. I thanked her for making me feel better.

Ed , Thank you for sharing. That is a very emotional testimony and glad the the words and tears made you feel some better. Personally I know I can’t make it through a single day without prayers. Sometimes at night when DH is asleep, I have long talks with God! My tears soak my pillow, then it’s time to get up, put on that smile and start another day with DH. Some are fairly good days and others, well everyone has the others. Today he told me his brain felt like it was in a deep hole and he was scared and very tired. I don’t know what that means, but it scared me too.

My prayers are with you and your family.

Ed, so glad you had that cathartic release. We have to hold our emotions at bay for so long sometimes and put on the brave face, so it's bound to make us feel better after the release. That prayer was perfectly timed and probably not a coincidence. Praying for you and your sweet wife.

Ed, tears can be so helpful and healing. I hope they were for you. And I'm glad someone was there to help you through this difficult time.

I have only really cried once in the last couple of years. It was when I went to pick up DH to take him to the psych hospital. The social worker and several of DHs caregivers came in to support me. Support here is great - support in person can be even better.

Oh Ed, I’m so sorry.  I am praying for you and your wife. Tears can be a good release. I feel like we do everything we can and tears are what’s left.

And there I was thinking you were superhuman, Ed.  Still, you’re made of sterner stuff than I am, to have held out this long.  Hope you’re ok with having shed tears and, perhaps, experienced a little relief.

"Tears are the silent language of grief;" dear Ed, I understand and my heart goes out to you.

. The composition of tears caused by emotion differs from that of tears as a reaction to irritants, such as onion fumes, dust, or allergy. Maybe that is why a good old fashioned emotional cry is good for us. It is a release.

I checked the internet (which we all know never lies) and it said: Research has found that in addition to being self-soothing, shedding emotional tears releases oxytocin and endorphins. These chemicals make people feel good and may also ease both physical and emotional pain.

Hopefully it was just what you needed. Hugs to you!
