Burnout(2)

What happens if a family has been caregiver for so long they are experiencing severe burnout but cannot afford nursing home and no programs are available.  Does the state get involved or does the family just spontaneously combust?  There are no daycare programs the elder can do, no services available and only one friend who can help out on occasion.  It's just not enough.  She walks constantly...

If that family were mine, I would see a CELA about qualifying for Medicaid.  And I would start work on it tomorrow morning, rather than wait for family to combust.

Ahh, HJ, I'm so sorry to hear of that family's distress. Caregiving is utterly overwhelming, and it can chip away at one's physical health, finances, relationships, joy, and mental health. I agree with the advice given regarding Medicaid - as quickly as possible.

HJFowler-- please take some deep breaths, physically step away from your situation and look around as there are options available.  Caregiving will consume a person and family unless specific steps are enacted to deal with the situation. You need to do this now.
First, as suggested, find a CELA (certified elder lawyer) and set up an appointment to meet and discuss your situation.  Yes, daunting (and costly) but will provide immense relief to develop and commit to a plan of action.
Medicaid is a wonderful program but has numerous layers and paperwork to complete. A skilled elder lawyer is well worth whatever fees they charge.  Any type of government program will require paperwork and may not be able to accommodate your situation right now.
Also reach out the the ADRC (Aging Disability Resources agencies) in your area.  ADRC resources are free and very on point regarding dementia. The Alzheimer's Association has excellent resources available as well.

I also think that Medicaid is a good way out. As for burnout, it is important for a caregiver not to forget about his/her own health. When my Mom looked after my Dad, she was very exhausted and stressed all the time. So, I insisted on her visit to a doctor and he prescribed B vitamins. I found good ones on the Canada Drugs site https://www.canadadrugsdirect.com/. I should say, they helped her.
