Refuses care

My DH will not see a doctor.  I am looking into assisted living and discovered you must have a physical to be accepted.  Does anyone have suggestions?  We live in California.  My best guess is that he has frontotemporal dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Association has a 24 hour help line.
You might try calling. They should be able to give some suggestions.

How extensive of a physical is required? I wonder if your DH would go to a place like CVS Minute Clinic and have a physical done by the nurse there? Just trying to think of options. Maybe tell him he’s going for a vaccination or something?

Lizzielou, this is a concern I also have moving forward. I have no bright suggestions. I've thought of contacting dh's insurance to see if there is someone they could recommend that might do a video visit. Let us know how it goes.

Perhaps tell him your current health insurance is now requiring members to have annual exams to maintain their coverage. Tell him you both have to do it and he might buy that excuse.

Where I live there is a company that does Dr. home visits. They only treat the elderly and most of their patients have dementia. Perhaps there is something similar where you live.

Possibly tell him that Medicare requires an annual wellness exam( they do pay for one).

Or schedule it, tell him it’s for you and you need him for moral support.  Of course, tell the nurse the ruse separately so that the doctor asks both of you the same initial questions, dies  the vitals checks on both etc.   at some point, your husband should start relaxing and then the doctor can focus on him.

My parents had to do a ‘wellness’ check as part of their entry to assisted living.  It’s not really an extensive thing.  I don’t remember their doctor having  to do much beyond the vitals check,  listing their known condition and verifying they met the assisted living center’s requirements.

I think the evaluation by the assisted living center’s nurse was probably more nerve racking.  They won’t except people who need more daily care than they can provide
