Brand new here- Father in law Just diagnosed

Hi.  I’m new here.  My father in law just got diagnosed just last week with Alzheimer’s.

What tools, tips, advice can you give?

Thanks in advance,

Alicia Roark

Hi Aroark and welcome to the best little club you never wanted to join. You will find enormous support and knowledge here. One thing to do is go to the "Support" tab or menu item, depending on what kind of device you're here on, and check out the resources there. Another thing (what I did the most of when I joined) is, read, read,  read! Read all the topics you find of interest. Everything is worth reading, believe me.

You can also gather your DH into the club, and try to keep good relations with the rest of his family. I was honored to be an "extra sister" on my MIL's family care management team, but not all are received so well.

How are FIL and MIL's affairs, legally, financially? Who has POA? Is it a Durable POA? An how about Health POA? How is MIL taking things? How much time are family members wanting to contribute?

Very important: does FILstill drive? Even if he's just fine and dandy now, doesn't mean tomorrow he won't have a scary (at best) accident. My mom stopped driving voluntarily when she nearly drove into the ravine right next to her garage. My MIL one day got lost on her way to the hairdresser, and was coaxed to sell her car to a young family member.

Again, welcome! It's sometimes quiet here on weekends, but things will pick up next werk. Gives you plenty of time to read around the boards!

Some of the things that would help is knowing the state you are from. Next is getting a CELA (a Certified Elder Law attorney) others will chime in to help you with more advice and explaining things better. Hoot
