We have noticed a decline in my mom’s memory for over a year. We finally were informed she has a form of dementia but they are still running scans and tests to determine exactly what it is. I am worried about what happens when we need to move her to a new location because she’s 60 and doesn’t qualify for disability since she worked at a school in Texas and put into TRS not SS, my dad makes too much money for SSI, and so we are in a very complicated spot on how to proceed. She definitely already needs more help than we can give since I don’t live with them and dad and I both work 40+ hours a week. Any advice?

Welcome to this place yet I’m sorry about this difficult news for you and yours. Your mom is quite young, I’m sorry.

I wonder if your dad  has POAs and other legal matters in order. Might be a good time if not.  A specialized elder law attorney is your best bet to make sure finances and legal paperwork are set up for her continued care.  It’s worth the expense.

Maybe hiring in some help during yours and your dads work hours?  We started with split shifts each day, 3 hours in the am and 3 in the afternoon/evening.  Adult day care may be of some help.  Installing cameras so you can see how she’s doing while she’s alone?  We’ve used cameras for over four years now and they’re incredibly helpful, even with 24/7 care.  The cameras don’t need to be expensive.

You’ve come to the right place.  There are extremely wise and supportive folks here that will help with your journey.  Please keep coming back.

Call the TRS office  in Texas.  Ask them about disability/ pension. If they won’t discuss with you, ask them to discuss hypothetical situations that fit your mom: age, length of service,  etc.  is it possible that she can start drawing her TRS pension at 60?  Ask about health insurance, etc.  find out what they need to discuss your mom with her spouse or another person.
