A helpful tip - cold days

So, a hospice nurse that came out the other week made a recommendation that we tried and works great for my FIL and I wanted to pass it along.

Because my LO wears only long shirts or gowns, she suggested using leg warmers. We bought some that go all the way up to the thighs. I was always covering his legs with blankets when he sits in a chair, but he still seemed cold. While they look a little silly (we did go with black and grey ones not pink, at least), it has been wonderful for him, and he doesn’t seem to mind them at all.  We still use the blanket too, just in case.

Another tip that a caregiver and I discovered. If you have a LO intent on scooting down out of a gerichair, the pommel does work IF you have a tray on. My FIL kept scooting right over the pommel until we thought to put the tray on. So much better than the seatbelt we were using.

Hope someone else finds this helpful.

May Flowers that's an excellent tip and I'm going to get some leg warmers for my mom. Thank you! We've been putting Tubigrip compression socks on my mom since she has edema in the legs, and covering those with fleecy socks. But I think leg warmers would be even better than fleece socks and would certainly provide her with my warmth. Again, thank you!

Thanks, and I hope it works well for you too  We put knit beanies on his head too, which he seems to like.

We keep his room very warm (the rest of us are sweating) but he stays chilled as he is all skin and bones now.

May flower, great tips, thank you for sharing. My dh is ALWAYS cold even when it’s 90 degrees. I have to ask a dumb question, where did you get leg warmers for men? Ones that are long enough, my dh is 6’4”.

Joydean, it’s a good question. I bought women’s? Unisex? Not sure but here is what I bought. They are very soft but get washed a lot so we will see how they hold up. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YGNRR4C/

So, my FIL is 5’9” and probably 120 lbs, and has skinny legs. These stretch from his ankles to mid thigh and are snug but not tight. They have some plus size on Amazon too which might work better for bigger men?

Thanks for the tip, May flowers. And finally - a solution for scooting out of the chair. Yay!

I was thinking about this option while going thru my mindfulness when alone this morning.  For a very tall person what about two pair?  Maybe a smaller size for the calves and a normal pair for above the knee?  I dont know, just a thought.

That’s a great idea M&M… another thought for men might be warm/wool wader socks that go over the knee.

Those who are crafty might be able to crochet some and adjust for sizing. Here’s one pattern: https://www.yarnspirations.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-master-catalog-spinrite/default/dw8a591bfe/PDF/RHC0101-022597M.pdf

I would think for men you could add a few stitches to get the diameter you want and keep working the pattern until you had the length you want. I’m sure we all have this kind of time on our hands (haha)

    This is a great tip!
My mom is becoming bed-bound and I foresee pants becoming a thing of the past. I think I'll sew some from polar fleece fabric. I'd love to knit a few pair but that would take me months

I like the suggestion of leg warmers.  DH uses a urinal, but unfortunately he has some misses and dribbles.  Hence his shorts / pajama pants often get wet at the waistline, requiring multiple changes a day.  The leg warmers could keep his legs warm and the lack of waistline means no wet zone so fewer  changes.  So I will start looking for leg warmers….although they probably don’t come in Tall Guy size.
