Poem for my FIL (religious)
When the roads to your memories became blocked,
and this disease hid you away,
the father and grandfather as we used to know
was slowly fading away.
A man of few words, became the man of no words,
with recollections all askew,
but when you couldn’t talk, we became your voice,
because, when you couldn’t see us, we saw you.
We told you your stories and held your hand,
and reminded you of what was true.
When you couldn’t remember, we understood,
because, when you didn’t know us, we knew you
Sometimes you were afraid, sad, or angry,
and it sometimes left us wounded and blue.
When you fought our efforts to help you, it’s okay,
because, when you couldn’t love us, we loved you.
We fed you, and bathed you, and kept you safe.
We became your hands, your feet, your will.
It wasn’t that we have some special ability.
It’s because you are made in God’s image still.
We didn’t love to get a return,
But we did cherish every smile, every hug, every song
that you expressed when you could.
Those glimpses helped us carry on.
God knew you before you were born,
and he knew you in dementia’s storm
He was with you as you breathed your last,
now he sees you, healed, at the throne.
So, take heart, all who suffer,
because we all have some burden to bear.
Even when we feel lost or far from God,
he is still, always there
He knew us before we knew him.
He loved us before our first breath.
He sees us when we feel blinded
And he will welcome us home upon death.
