We need to take away my father in laws driving privileges' but have no clue how to go about it, no matter what avenue we take he will forget he agreed to it and be looking for his keys or car the next day possibly thinking it was stolen and calling the police everyday, what should we do? Hi tmo81 - welcome to 'here', but sorry for the reason.

You would normally get more response to your question when you start a new thread, as this one is rather old.

but to answer - most of us have gone with fiblets.  'The car is in the shop due to a recall, and due to supply chain issues, it will be a while'.   'so-and-so borrowed the car because theirs is in the shop.'   whatever works, and repeat as necessary. and do remove the car from view if it isn't already.

You may also want to contact the local police to let them know that your LO has dementia and that the car isn't stolen so that they don't have to go through any paperwork for a stolen item that doesn't exist.

    Hi and welcome.

I reposted your question and the answers you have gotten thus far. This was a zombie post that's a decade old and might not be seen otherwise.

There's a tab above labeled "solutions" that has a lot of strategies for the driving situation that may be helpful in addition to the sound advice you have already gotten.

    A couple of thoughts:

Does someone have a POA and the legal power to disappear the car? It can get sticky if you don't have a POA/guardianship and take the car without permission especially if FIL still has the ability to report it stolen. In this case, it might be easier to create a fiblet about a recall while it awaits parts held up by supply chain issues.

Dad's neurologist told him he couldn't drive anymore which allowed us to be his allies in the unfairness of the situation rather than the bad guys. Is this an option for you? This was also useful because dad's insurance policy did not cover a driver diagnosed with dementia or driving AMA. You should check with his agent.

In some states, you can report a compromised driver to the DMV which triggers a retest. Alas, this can take some time and in early stages, he could possibly pass a simple test.
