Legal Docs Completed

Thanks to all who suggested that I see an elder care lawyer and get our wills updated and POAs in place. We/I got it all done this week! I feel relieved. Thank you for your suggestions and kindnesses.

That's great, the day will come when you'll be very glad those documents are safely tucked away.  One suggestion (I learned this the hard way):  put the originals somewhere where your spouse doesn't have access to them.  My partner completely undid a former will when she (as dementia was setting in) made handwritten changes to her will without ever signing or dating.  When she redid her will after her sister died (barely got it signed before she took a nosedive), I put copies for her in her desk but put the originals locked away.

I know that was a weight off my shoulders when we got ours done. A suggestion I got from this forum was to have an electronic copy of the medical POA on your phone. I have it in my email so I can access it from any computer I have access to. Really organized people have a paper copy (along with other documents) in their car. I’m not that organized yet.

Thanks again! Good ideas to have the original somewhere different than the copies (Thanks M1) and to have an electronic copy on my phone and a paper copy in the car (Thanks, Pat6177)!! You all are the best.

One document  that is often forgotten is a HIPPA authorization
nice online form  from NY but the law is the same everywhere

I got my dw several years ago after reading about a dpoa here. It contains the hippa clause as well. A most useful document. Fortunately I don't need to go for Guardianship.
