Cutting Back on Meds

My dad is 94 on this long slog. He takes about 12 pills a day since the Serequel, and Gabipentiene was added to his list. I spoke to the doctor and she eliminated the baby aspirin and an OTC called D'Mannose. I am going to ask her if he can come off the statin he has been taking for close to 30 years.

Does anyone have experience with eliminating medication? I have told the doctor it's my aim. My dad really can't stand taking them.

 Thanks,

 Malka

We tried this with my mom, after a hospitalization..  unfortunately the hospitalist was a little overzealous and discontinued both her Plavix and the GI med she had been on and she ended up with a really nasty GI bleed.  My advice is to talk to the pharmacist (a good one) as well as the MD, maybe to help come up with the right questions to ask either of them.

When my mom moved from AL to MC, the MC physician immediately stopped her statin, saying,"This isn't recommended after 75 anyway". It was Mom's only prescription besides her anxiety/depression med, which I am blanking on the name of right now. She was90 at the time.

Some may be able to be crushed and fed in yogurt or applesauce, etc.  Must verify which with a pharmacist.  We stopped many meds for my mom when “pill burden” was too much for her.  We had to titrate off a couple, others could simply be stopped.  Now moms cocktail is minimal and she hasn’t any idea she’s even getting them. I must feed her the “dessert” to make sure every last drop is ingested.  It’s daunting to get all that under control but worth it.

    Sorry for your struggles!
