My mom is in the later stages of Alzheimer’s. Just curious when you get hospice involved.  She talks but only makes sense about 1/2 the time. Is incontinent and lays around for the most part. We are just unsure where to turn at this point.  Her dr is not a lot of help.  So thinking we need to make the connection with hospice ourself. Not sure where to go from here.

Hello Dolly, welcome but sorry you have to be here.

In our area a large hospice organization has both hospice and palliative care sections.    Palliative care for terminally ill but not yet "close" to death (within 6 months.)   Hospice care is provided based on the patients in 3-4 key areas. loss of language, weight loss, and loss of mobility.  Prior to reaching their criteria in those areas palliative care is available.

If you want an evaluation you can call and ask for an evaluation. Usually a RN or PRN will come out and assess your loved one.  Their Dr will review the assessment and recommend whatever services they think are appropriate.  In our area you do not need a Dr's referral to get that assessment, you can call yourself and request one.   This a very long and tough road, good luck.  Rick
