Question on medicare 5 year lookback

I have been taking care of my mother the last 8 years. She is geting worse and worse as each day passes. My question is...we never wrote up a verbal agreement but was understood that she would pay her fair share when she moved in with us. She pays for all the groceries and in the last 3 years has paid the phone and power bill. We pay everything else, mortgage, homeowners dues, trash, insurance on her car etc.. How does the 5 year lookback consider her portion that she pays. It is run through her checking account,  so there is record of these transactions. My husband and I are retired and barely make it on our social security.  Will they look at this unfavorably when they do ,their lookback? If she were living in a mental care facility it would be costing her probably $4,000 ,to $5,000 a month. How do they look at this?

Thank you!

I think you are talking about Medicaid not Medicare.

You will need to contact their office in your state regarding specifics on the 5 year lookback, as Medicaid varies by state.

For best information regarding details of your particular situation you could contact an Elder Care Attorney who could help her qualify.

When applying  for Medicaid they will be looking for anything that may have been sold or given away as someone trying to hide assets such as vehicles ,real estate ect in the last 5 years not so much on paying the normal cost of living stuff. Having everything taken out of checking shows what it was spent on and if you keep those statements they will great proof of how the money was spent.

If you haven't seen a cela do that as soon as possible.
