hi, I am new to this site. i was the primary caregiver for my brother, who was diagnosed with vascular dementis this past March. He had a series of strokes 12 years ago, had aphasia as a result and very slowly began to get worse with his memory, driving skills. I took his car away from him in August because his neuro psyche said he didnt recommend driving for him anymore, and he physiclly attacked me. Nevertheless, I havent talked to my brother since August. I do however continue to pay his rent and his bills. I do not have POA nor do I want it. He has a social services case manager and has been approved for full medicaid. No nursing home or assisted living will take him, and I havent the power to make him go into one. I tried to get a guardian appointed for him, and was denied.......any ideas on what to do from here?

Hi suedue - So sorry you had to deal with that. Not sure why social services couldn't recommend him into a memory care, but I'm not sure how that all works, though.
You could call the Alz Assoc number - 1-800-272-3900. Ask for a care consultant.
Good for you for removing the car and making sure the bills get paid. I totally get not wanting POA. DH has for MIL and it is much responsibility.

Hi Sue. Is the social services person someone you can talk to? Perhaps he/she would have some thoughts about next steps. Surely they know that he will eventually need a guardian. If not poa, do you have hippa privileges with his docs? They would be the other source of information.
Good luck, sounds like a difficult situation.

I have talked to his CM and they sent someone out to "assess" him to see whether he needed a guardian. They decided he was functioning in his environment and does not require assistance. He has no clue how to write a check, sign up to have bills automatically deducted from his checking account. Molst of the time he cant sign his name. If he rfeads something he has no idea what it means, but yea he's functioning!!! There is not enough help available to these people!0

Suedue, did the person that came out to assess him know that he is not paying his bills and that you are doing all of that?0
