Is 24/7 care safe?

Hi everyone,

My Mom (71) has Alzheimer’s. I'm (40) her full-time live-in caregiver. I'm trying to prepare for when I can no longer take care of her. There are so many pros and cons to memory care and live-in care. I thought I would ask this group about 24/7 care. I like the idea of her being cared for at home by someone who will be able to handle her. My problem is that I live here, too.  The thought of a stranger awake in the house moving around while I'm asleep creeps me out. Am I overreacting? I get that the person would be in the house caring for my Mom. I guess I'm looking for some examples of how 24/7 care in the home went for you. If you have a strong opinion why in-home or memory care is better I'd be interested in your opinions, too. TIA!

From what you describe it sounds like you are referring to "live in" care, and at that no one can do it 24/7.

24/7 care to me is thru an agency who arranges for several people to take shifts of caring for the patient.  Some of the issues related to this are that you do not always get the same people...could be many different ones.  Another issue is that agency care is hard to depend on as caregivers come and go rather frequently with no notice, and then possibly you have no one for the shift with little to no notice.

The quality of MC facilities varies.  The level of staff to patients varies.  Regardless of which facility you choose you will need to still "oversee" with regular visits...if not with loved one at least to the facility to discuss care and any issues.

No solution is ideal.  You just need to assess the situation you are in, and pick the best option based on what you know and feel.  No wrong answer.
