He looked like himself

This past Sunday, I DH asked me to help him pick out his clothes to wear to church. I got him out his khaki pants and a white shirt.  The, since it was so cold outside, I got out two sweaters for him to choose from.  He looked so handsome!  Later, he was watching a football game on TV and instead of slouching in his recliner with a blanket over him, he was sitting up with his legs crossed and paying attention to the game.  When I looked at him, just for a moment he looked normal...he looked like the man I fell in love with all those many years ago and it took me by surprise!  I just stared at him for awhile and my heart felt so warm.  Later, of course, he was slumped in his chair with his blanket and getting confused and looking disheveled.  For a moment though, I saw him as he was and it both warmed and broke my heart all over again.

Brenda, I'm glad you had at least some time where you felt a little relief from that which is not the norm any longer. But that experience on the roller coaster is something that is always, always hard. I'm sorry you had to experience it.

Yes white crane every moment like that is a double edge sword. But I am glad you got to see your dh as he was if only for a time.

Brenda, glad you got to see the man you fell in love with. I had that experience last year and it still carries me through. Yes it hurts like the devil but just for a short time your heart feels the good warm feeling. For me it keeps me looking for that special feeling one more time. That’s all I ask “one more time “.  Sadly since that time he has progressed so much but that doesn’t keep me from hopeing.  Prayers for you and your dh.

    Brenda,

I remember those moments of vivid remembrance; sadly, they are long gone.  I now find myself rooting through photographs seeking any that portray DH as “whole”, smiling and alert.  These days he presents as totally detached, emotionless, gone.  I hope you experience many more moments that warm your heart, even if they are quick and fleeting.  Cherish.

I call those "my treasured moments." Because they are just that - a treasure to hold onto. Thank you for sharing.
