Walker refusal

Hi everyone,

I am a CP for my father and he is refusing to use a walker or wheelchair. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Thank you

Depending on how far along in the dementia process your LO is, they may not recognize the need for or how to use a walker/wheelchair.  Does LO forget that they are not able to get up on their own?  This would require more supervision for them as they may not be able to learn that they need an assistive device and are going to have repeated falls.  Unfortunately this is part of the dementia process.

This is just an observation from my pov in the mcf where my is.I have watched the pt instruct pwd how to safely use a walker, rollator.  But some cna's don't use the skills the pwd were taught.  It would be good if the pt would train the staff.

My mother hated the walker she was given in rehab. She didn't need it! Instead, she furniture walk and scared everyone around her, but she was NOT HANDICAPPED!

Then we got a rollator walker where she could lift the seat and store her purse and jacket. I said this is just like a shopping cart! She would frown but trying to get out the door carrying various items she decided to try it and there was no looking back after that.

We had to move back to just a regular walker after surgery, where she lost her strength and could not control the rollator. She is aware of her weakness and hasn't requested it.

Thank you. We have the rollator. But is reluctant to use it in place of the cane.

I use a rollator when not furniture walking. The two big pluses are being able to move faster and to transport stuff on the seat. It makes me much more independent!
