Just got a dose of reality/ unreality

I just got home from a visit with my mother in AL. She’s been there since early November. In a nutshell, if you haven’t read my previous posts, while living at home alone, she began thinking people on TV could see her. Fast forward to going through psych evaluation & then to AL. So my daughter & I visited today. I remarked that I had been watching a certain TV show lately. My mother said she doesn’t watch much TV (she has a TV in her room at AL) because the people on TV can see her and wave to her and she doesn’t like it. I didn’t react, hoping to get an answer to my next question. My mother said she had watched a Christmas movie with a group in the common area. I asked “does that happen on the TV in the common room too?” She said “yes, the people on TV could tell there was a group there, it’s an old TV.” My daughter was with me, so I feel confident I was not misunderstanding. I changed the subject. My heart sank, because I thought maybe the meds had helped this delusion. At the same time, it did give me a bit of comfort just knowing that maybe, just maybe, I did the right thing by putting her in AL. Thanks for listening, I suppose I’m just a bit stunned. This happened about an hour & 1/2 ago, and I just needed to vent or whine. Anyway, thank you all.

I replied to one of your other posts about the similarity with my own situation. As with you, I've been hoping my LO's psychosis was a one-off or quickly passing -- as easily forgotten as everything else. And, yet, it persists. The new normal? *sigh* #solidarity0

Sorry to hear that did happen, but at same time, kind'a gives you validation and some peace, knowing more for sure that you've done what was needed to keep her safe and more comfortable. I hope she has less fears of the tv with others around. 'this' certainly is NOT easy, this frickin' disease.0

I am glad the visit gave you the “answer” you needed.
I’ve learned from others here that venting can give you
the momentary peace to keep going . I hope you rest well
tonight.

Hello Mckangel. I understand how upsetting it is to watch a family member decline. I wanted to point out two things. One, from what you describe, it doesn't appear your mother is upset about the delusion. If that's true, it's the best you can hope for and probably best to let it be. Two, I don't know the type or when she started the medication, but it can take 4-6 weeks or more to help with delusions. Wish you the best.0
