A clock winding down

Last week Tuesday my mother turned 89. Each day she seems a little more weak. She still gets up and dresses herself, eats her toast and drinks her coffee. She appears exhausted from getting dressed. She goes after breakfast and sits in her rocking chair and falls asleep.  Sometimes she just sits and stares. On the rare occasion that I do leave the house she will ask if I am coming back, other than that not much communication.  Since moving in with her 9 months ago I see changes in her physical appearance that indicate her body is aging.  I pray she passes away peacefully in her sleep.

Thank you all for reading and supporting me thru this journey.  I pray for all of you who are dealing with more challenging situations than I am.

Hi Kay82 - I like your analogy of the clock winding down.   It is difficult to see our LO to be declining.

Kay82,  your analogy is exactly what I’ve been looking for.  Thank you. I’ve been trying to find a way to get others to understand that my mom will never be any better than she is today.

My mom, age 87, does a similar routine, but she is in memory care. The aides help getting her up and into the routine or she would remain in bed. She was a bit of a gossip and liked conversation with others, but now remains in her own little world and barely responds. I think she can’t follow conversations anymore, the processing isn’t there and short term memory blocks what the earlier conversation was about.

I too pray that she passes peacefully in her sleep over a fall, sickness, or just the body shutting down . A natural death takes several days to a week, and is painful to watch.
