my brother has a special spot where he likes to sit and/or nap. Recently though, I noticed that he has been sitting where I like to sit. This morning I noticed that there is a distinct wet spot between the cushions where I am sitting. I put my hand down there, and indeed, it was wet, and when i smelled my fingers, it was pee. He has been wearing depends, but I am wondering if he found a new spot to go. Is this this typical behavior

Yes this usually happens in stage six. It’s hard to get pee smell out of soft cushions or foam. You need to cover all stuffed chairs and couches . They sell a waterproof couch and chair cover that is sold for keeping wet dogs from messing cushions. It is sold on Amazon and comes in different covers. Also in a pinch you can remove the cushion from a stuffed chair and cover the cushion with a garbage bag. Then put a chuck around the cushion and put the cover back on. But pee will run off the cushion and down into the chair . It’s better to use the cover for dogs.
It’s a terrible thing to go through but the prep you do will give you peace of mind and save the furniture

Yep, typical for later stages of Alzheimers and some other dementias. Not only losing the ability to know when they need to go but also where to go. He will need much more supervision in the bathroom. For a short while you may need some adaptive clothing, they make garments that zip in the back that the person needs help to get off. That way he can't urinate somewhere random. You probably want to have him on a toileting schedule to get ahead of it. Set a timer and have him try every 2 hours or whatever seems necessary for him. Protect all furniture with water proof covers. We also put disposable chux pads under the place my mom usually sat covered by a blanket we washed often. We ended up sending the couch to the dump after she left for memory care, there was too much smell in it to deal with.0
