What kind of lawyer

Need help to understand what type of lawyer I should reach out to. My sister and I have POA for our mom with dementia. We haven’t formally done anything with it yet, but slowly have been working to gain her trust so we can help her pay her bills, write checks for the home care aides, manage grocery costs, etc etc. I created online access to her checking account so I can more easily monitor the balances and avoid bounced checks. My aunt is continuing to interfere and tries to convince our mom that we are taking her money, and planning as if she is already dead. I want to consult with an attorney to find a way to formally notify my aunt that has no rights and needs to back off. Is this an estate lawyer that could help?

I’d reach out first to the lawyer that did the POA documents.

If the lawyer who drew up the documents is not available, you want a certified elder law attorney. You can find them listed by location at nelf.org.

Agree with the other posters that trying to reason with your mom is futile. It's a natural instinct, but her reasoner is broken, as they say in this forum. The same may very well be true with your aunt. Does she live with your mother? She may have a vested interest here if she fears a threat to her own living arrangement.

    good luck-

You want an elder law attorney. Certified ones (CELA) can be few and far between in some areas, but at minimum one who practices primarily in estate planning and other issues related to seniors. You will probably have to find work arounds to keep the aunt from stirring the pot with your mom. Block her number in her phone etc, the only time she gets access is if you are there with her to steer the conversation. Or it could be you need to cut off all access for a while. These are the hard things we sometimes have to do as POAs.
