Suggestions for In Home Sitter

Hello and sorry I don't get on here much....hard to find the time in my new role as a live-in caregiver with two jobs.

Mom has gotten worse and we are looking for someone to sit with her during the days or nights when I can't be here.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I begin? I live in the Memphis, TN area.

Thanks.

Good heavens! You really do need help. The fastest way is to go with a franchise of a national agency. Another suggestion, at one point the local alz assoc here kept a list of smaller care companies or, ask for recommendations from members of local alz support groups. I found that unless I had a certain number of hours on specific days that no one was interested, so you have to schedule your appointments on those specific days and times.

With success, we used Comfort Keepers, Seniors Helping Seniors, Care.com and one other home care company I can’t remember the name just now. These were all non-medical but would help with medication oversight. We also installed inexpensive cameras in all rooms except bathrooms which helped in many ways especially while we set up 24/7 in home care. When the neurologist told us it was time for 24/7, he also said cameras could be a source of 24/7 supervision while we got our act together. We were able to supervise and even talk to her through the cameras, until that freaked her out. We already had help 8 hrs/day in two 4 hour shifts. My brother and I were doing long distance care and when 24/7 started, it was difficult to manage, therefore, only lasted 6 mos. We eventually moved her to a single family home next to me in CO for her continued care. Care.com can be more time consuming as the interviewing/vetting and tax liability is on you. Could be less expensive. It helps if you know the schedule of days and times you want help. We also used an adult day care for a short time span, of course that’s during business hours. Our cost was between $20-30/hr for in home care. Turn over and different caregivers are sometimes a problem. We usually had a base staff that we could count on and became close with. My mom was an “easy gig” for the most part, so caregivers didn’t want a new assignment. I am pretty easy going too.

POAs are necessary at some point, hope you have all that set up.

I did a search in Memphis, TN and this is what came up: https://www.google.com/search?q=in+home+senior+care+memphis,+TN&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari

Good luck with your search. Sorry for this journey you and yours are on.

I've been looking in Tampa FL and this company gets good reviews: Someone also recommended high school or college students who were taking nursing courses but I haven't looked into that. Also go read the post someone put in this Discussion Forum about Hospice. It says call them early. They have palliative care. They may know who to call. https://www.visitingangels.com/memphis/home

Thank you all for your input! We have found one lady who will sit with her during business hours. As a musician, my 2nd "job" runs into the wee hours of the morning, so that will be more difficult. This lady charges $18/hr, so based on what you are telling me, this is a good deal. I plan to set up cameras too for me and my siblings to check in on her. She is an independent worker and a friend of a friend. :)
