Monitoring devices

My elderly parent who lives alone has early stage Alzheimer’s. She’s still doing well at the moment with caring for herself. My family and check on her throughout the day. I set up all her daily medications for the week so she does not have to worry about doing that.

Since I can’t be there with her everyday, I wanted to look into getting a monitor device to check in on her. She’s been staying inside and hasn’t started wandering as of right now. Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or thoughts on what I should do.

I had heard the Amazon Echo Shows are handy because you can video in and go live without the person having to 'answer'. I'm not positive about that however, and would defer to the forum or your own research. I did see that there are baby monitor apps that you can load onto an old phone or Ipad to turn it into a room monitor. Amazon has a bunch of room/baby monitors available. Any new tech that will require her to learn new steps to use it won't work.

Before we could move my mom to her AL she would go for daily walks, but even though I was working from home I worried--I had a little gps tracker I put in her pocket (that made her mad & she kept trying to leave by the door). Now the Apple AirTags have a huge selection of ways to attach them to things that you could probably find a way to lace them into shoes easily or attach as a lanyard. However, once you get to the getting lost stage it's time for more oversight, whatever that looks like. You may want to consider seeing if now might be a better time to move to AL, while she can still develop a routine. Just food for thought.

    I bought one of these:

There are lots of similar monitors available on Amazon. You can watch in real-time and save video to the cloud. Family have had great success monitoring their parents with these cameras in assisted living. They've spotted falls and other activity that the staff didn't see.
