Gryzy, I think it is important to develop a mindset that will help you face your new challenges. Personally, I decided I would do whatever it takes to maintain my independence. I learned to manage my environment and learned stress relief and stress avoidance tactics. There are medications that can be prescribed as an option.

How and where did you learn these techniques? I am 77 year old widow just diagnosed with dementia. I will be seen at University of Wisconsin memory clinic later this month. I too want to live independently as long as possible. My daughter who is 58 was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s last year. I am unable to be any help for her as I live 1500 miles away from her. Any direction you can give me to find self help I would appreciate it. Thank you. Rose.

Welcome Roset. I'm sorry to learn about your and your daughter's diagnoses. You say you have yet to consult at a Memory clinic. Are you going for a second opinion? I think that is wise. It is important to rule out all possibly treatable dementia mimics.

It is possible to manage independently for a long time but this will take some planning. I learned just about everything I need to know from the members here, both patients and caregivers. I know quite a lot now.

What I could tell you would depend upon your situation. Do you think you might move to be closer to your daughter? Are there any other children or grandchildren who might be of assistance to you? You don't have to live with them, but they might oversee your care.

How are you managing now? What steps have you already taken to accommodate your illness? Please let me know, so I can give more pertinent answers.

Roset, it is very possible that the experts at the Wisconsin Memory Clinic will not agree that you have dementia. If, however, they agree that you have dementia, they will also likely have educational, medical and social resources to help you get through this mess. Oh, also try to keep notes of actions and thoughts that led you to be concerned about the state of your mind, AND put those notes in your purse before the day of your appointment. If you do that, there will be one less thing to forget before you leave your house for the appointment.

I also have moments when I lose my temper and can't control myself, before I just counted to 10 and everything passed, I was advised to do pilates https://betterme.world/articles/wall-pilates/, they say it calms the nervous system and takes away anxiety. Has anyone tried it?
