Medicaid & Transportation Assistance

My mom was diagnosed with Early On-Set Alz over 10 years ago & in the past few months has declined, specifically due to a fall where she fractured her tibia which has left her bed/wheelchair bound. This has created a lot more stress for me because I am the only child that lives close enough to be of any help to my father (who is my mom's main caregiver). My father doesnt need full-time help with mom yet but ideally someone who can come 1 hr 3x a day to help change her diaper. I am married with 2 young kids of my own & these past few months have been taking a toll on my family. Everyone tells me that Medicare & Medicaid pays for people to come help but I need getting that paperwork started/completed/filed. We also need help figuring out how to get our hands on a wheelchair accessible van so my father doesnt feel like he's trapped at home when he wants to take mom out to enjoy the weather.

I'm looking for some guidance on 2 items: filling out & filing all the paperwork for Medicaid, and getting wheelchair accessible transportation (non-emergency ). know there are agencies out there that will take care of this all (for a pretty penny) but has anyone had any luck with someone (or company) who does it pro-bono or at a less expensive fee? And where can we find a van to buy local to Connecticut?

Thanks so much everyone!

In your shoes, I would call your Area Agency on Aging for guidance around ADA compatible van services in your community. They should know what might be available at low-cost to them.

Uber offers wheelchair accessible van service in some places.

Vans are very expensive and can be hard to come by. My neighbor bought a new one for his wife with MS; the turn-around time was almost a year to delivery. I cost an additional $12K over MSRP for the basic van. He was able to sell it for what he paid a few years later and buy himself a new Corvette.
