Best way to sell Mom's stuff
What's the best way to sell the contents of Mom's house? A few pieces of English antique furniture from the late 1800s, china and glassware sets, older cookware and utensils, 50-year old piano, her old iphone X, and nick-nack collections of owls and clowns.
Hire someone? Who to look for? A garage sale in this neighborhood doesn't seem smart (too low-income).
My Mom moved to an ALF a few months ago. Neurosurgeon ruled out NPH yesterday, and now we think it's frontotemporal dementia, so she won't be coming back home. She can't really walk anymore.
We will have to sell the house within 12 months, so I'm going through everything now to prepare.

Is there a local antique shop? Maybe an antique mall that works on consignment? You can also look into auctioneers. They can do an auction at her house or they can retrieve what they think will sell and sell it at their location. They will take a percentage of the sale amount.

Thank you for the link.
Yes, I'm working with an elder law attorney. She is currently on the Medicaid waiting list and ranked highest with their help. The attorney thinks one to four more months before she's off the waitlist. I'm still in need of one identification document, but otherwise I think we're all set.
Under their advisement we created a qualified-income trust and a pooled-assets trust as well as a lady bird deed and personal services contract. Of course, I'm also the DPOA and healthcare surrogate.
We had a scare recently where she developed some blood clots in her lungs and legs. We had to move her to a nursing home for a few weeks after some hospitalization. Luckily the ALF took her back, but I can now foresee the need for a nursing facility in the future. During my last couple of visits I helped cut her food up and get it onto the fork even. She just seemed frail. But it's not all the time, so it's hard to understand.

The bigger piece her is whether the investment in obtaining top dollar is worth the time-- away from your LO and your own life-- to maximize profit or not. There are people who specialize in this sort of thing. They can come to her home and do a walk through and determine if her stuff is saleable in the current antiques/collectibles market. We used someone like this for my aunt's compound in Maine. We got his name from the elder law attorney we used for guardianship.
The dealer pulled up with 3 trucks- one for the dump, one for Goodwill and one for his own business. My aunt had a massive amount of stuff-- the contents of 2 homes plus things she'd inherited from both of their families over the years. I was kind of surprised by what was "hot" and what was not. Some her high end Cybis and Boehm porcelain was worth what she'd paid, but certain Pyrex and Corningware made the dealer very excited. I was told some of the antique furniture was "not popular" right now, but that the MCM pieces would command high prices. A quick look at ebay should give you a general idea about some of her collectibles and everyday things. You might be surprised. After the estate auction, my aunt got a check for a portion of the proceeds as part of a consignment arrangement.
Maxsold also does this kind of thing.

I sold a few of the larger, require moving truck, more expensive items on Facebook marketplace. It took some effort but was worth it. I gave myself and month and told myself if they didn’t sell I would just give to goodwill. It was worth it and not too terrible - and I lived out of state and had to coordinate with family in another city! We made it through painlessly. I think the key was keeping expectations low.
