Choosing a rehab- quickly!

Hi. Moms been in MC for a year and fell this week. She’s probably being discharged from the hospital Friday so we need a rehab for her, likely for 2 weeks.

She’s in an odd spot the past 6 months where she can be fairly lucid and aware she has dementia. She can sometimes hold a good conversation and come off as pretty much “normal”

But, if you know her, you’ll know she’s not in her childhood home town, (she retired in Florida) her husband wasn’t here this morning (he died in 2016), didn’t have a rough day at work yesterday, and has eaten n the past week (not missed every meal). She’s also very social and really just wants to be chit chatting with people all day

Anyway, we have the names of a few rehabs and will have to pick one tomorrow

Does anyone have any tips for what to ask or look for on our very quick tours of rehabs tomorrow?

She probably will be limited in her ability to comply with rehab exercises, directions and recommendations. Will someone accompany her to help her? Will she need an aid, such as a walker? What is the plan for after the two weeks. Be prepared for her to be discharged early for non-compliance.

Thanks. She should be able to return to her MC. Family will be here some of the time to accompany her. She has done Pt with a caring and Knowledgeable therapist, which I imagine they are at a rehab.

good advice on anticipating an early discharge though.

any advice on choosing a place?

If you've worked with a great PT previously, call them and ask them. They may have some ideas about which places have the best staff; they may even be part-time at one of them.

If that doesn't work, I would ask to speak to the PTs and OTs (they usually do both) at each facility and ask about their success with PWD in the moderate stages.

Your mom will need to cooperate to stay the full 2 weeks; so the personality of the PTs will be critical. If she's social and enjoys being doted on, she'll likely do well with the right team.

I always check google reviews and the Medicare nursing home ratings. https://www.medicare.gov/care-compare/

Choose nursing homes including rehab services.
