Maybe I've finished my poem
I'm not sure if it's finished. Rough day today.
SHE WAS SIXTEEN:
In front of her house
She stood waiting
For what would probably be
Her first time dating
But as luck would have it
He didn’t show
I happened by
And said “Hello”
Almost two years later, we were married
Another two years, and a bundle of joy
Yet another two years, another boy
Our children numbered
Seven then eight
Then with time
Came number nine
She, a high school dropout
But that didn’t matter
Her goal - to be an RN
And have an alma mater
She made it through at the top of her class
And she has some proof to put under glass
But those were the days
When our hearts were high
And we welcomed the future
With nary a sigh
Now that we’re old
Life takes a new path
Since she has dementia
Prepare for it’s wrath
She no longer cooks
She no longer cleans
She no longer looks
Toward any big thing
Her speech is fragile
Words are a battle
But it’s nothing new
And I’ll make it through
Her bathroom habits
Now uncontrolled
But she is my wife
To love and to hold
__________________________
Those words were thought of
Down deep in my mind
There are sweet memories
I pray I can find
Her toil’s now over
And now she can rest
She really deserves it
She gave us her best
If I could live my life again
And had my choice of all the girls
I’d pick one - that one
The one with the curls

Make sure you give a copy to each of your children.
Even though I am sure they know what a loving relationship you had with your dear wife, it will be a lasting reminder of what true love is.

Ed, thank you so much for sharing your poem. It is truly a testament of your life together and the love you shared. I'm going to copy it and put it in a book that I have written things about my wife, the love that we shared and the care we gave each other for 53 years and 16 days. Even though your life was not anything near to our life. We only had two kids, we ran a business together for 38 years but in the end, it ended up being just like yours, she no longer cooked she no longer cleaned. Her bathroom habits and her showering habits at times drove me insane. She ended up losing the ability to walk, to talk, or to eat the sad part about Alzheimer's, is that it rewrites all of our stories of our life together and in the end all of our stories are the same, Alzheimer's wins and we lose.
You have a gift of writing so keep writing your poems and post them. God's blessings to you Ed. Richard

WOW! Thank you for the unexpected replies. This is the one and only attempt I've ever had about poetry. This isn't who I am at all.
