My mother still is not adjusting well to MC. They called me and wanted me to have her doctor prescribe Zoloft. I took her to her PCP and they did prescribe Zoloft. I haven't delivered it to the med tech at the MC yet.

What experience has anyone had with Zoloft?

My mom is on it for her anxiety and depression, along with mirtrazapine. It’s helped quite a bit. It’s been around a long time. The generic version is sertraline.

Zoloft can be a great medication for depression and anxiety. That said, it can take up to 6 weeks before you will know whether it's working well for your mom. She may need some dosage adjustments in those 6 weeks as many docs like to start low/go slow with this class of medication.

ghphotog, I'd certainly let them try it. Zoloft/sertraline is in the SSRI family of drugs and generally well tolerated overall, and this class is recommended for treatment of anxiety and depression associated with dementia. My partner is on it, as well as Seroquel. Full effect can take 6 weeks but you may see some response even in the first week or two. It's not particularly stimulating or sedating, either one. Can be given morning or night. Might cause some weight gain (not huge), might cause sweating, might cause loose stools (rarely to any degree to be a problem).

It's made a tremendous positive difference in my mother's life. We started her on a low dose and have increased it once so far. She is generally sensitive to medications but has had no side effects that we know of.
