My mom is 93 and has been diagnosed with dementia. I’m not sure which stage she’s in but she has a couple good days and the rest of the days she is agitated, confused, angry, doesn’t sleep all night just paces. She has been started on mirtazapine but has only been on it a little over a week. I don’t know where I can find help in finding the correct medication for her, to help her sleep. Sleeping is half the battle, as we have gone through several caregivers. Any advice is greatly appreciated as I am so overwhelmed by this situation.

Is hospice on board? I suggest you have her assessed by hospice which will at least give you some respite while they are there. They will also help you with meds, supplies + support

no Hospice is not on board now. Physically my mom is very strong, mentally she is failing. I just wish she would sleep at night.

Have you tried a geriatric psychiatrist?

She refuses to see a psychiatrist always has. She “doesn’t have anything wrong” all my life like this… she is on an antidepressant through her GP and my sister and I have spoken to her GP earlier this month but I think it’s time we get very real and very specific… the mushrooms I have heard are f and am all for trying anything I can get her to take. Short of putting them in her tea we can’t get her to take what she needs because according to her “ she doesn’t need it”.. I’m so tired
