It’s the weekend and I absolutely do not know what to do or where we should go to get my mom help since her Alzheimer’s doctor me office is closed but she has fallen into a complete psychosis. She is 62. She has early Alzheimer’s and although she is completely forgetful this is all absolutely new behavior and she keeps trying to run away. We haven’t slept all weekend due to watching over her.

I would take her to the emergency room. She needs to be evaluated for medical causes and perhaps admitted to a geriatric psych unit. If you truly cannot care for her at home in her current state, say so and be adamant about it. Keep us posted....

So you are at the ER. Be certain they test for an UTI and that a culture is done. Please do not leave your mother alone in the hospital. Staff is NOT trained to care for people with dementia.

Hospitals now test urine by PCR which identifies the offending organisms through their DNA. Results available within hours. No culture needed. Another amazing medical advance. No more waiting 48-72 hours for the organism(s) to grow.

There's the possibility she has an infection. My father experienced the same thing due to an aspiration pneumonia. Definitely agree she should be taken to the ER asap. Take care of yourself.

If a UTI or other infection is not the issue, you may want to consider admission to a geri psych unit where she can be evaluated
