Neurologist

Hi,

How often do you take your LO to the neurologist. I can't figure out the benefit of going since his PC is a geriatrician and is managing his care. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Malka

Once the neuro made the official diagnosis and prescribed the first round of medication, we may have made one more visit for more testing and that was it before transferring into a PC office that specialized in working with patients who have dementia. I think a geriatrician PC is sufficient for most needs.

My DH's neurologist saw him a couple of times and then moved out of state. He told us that a geriatrician PC could handle everything.

After 1 1/2 years the geriatrician PC has referred my DH to a geriatric psychiatrist for help with his meds. That appointment is this week.

Hi Malka, I had the exact same experience as MrsAL. After the neurologist made the initial diagnosis, we never saw him again. My mother now just goes to her PCP who specializes in geriatric medicine, with referrals to specialists as needed (i.e. Opthamologist). I know others have suggested adding a geriatric psych for meds, but unfortunately we don’t have access to one. So far, the PCP seems to be sufficient for meds in my mom’s case.

Mom sees her NP in neurology twice a year. Mom is currently diagnosed as MCI even though I believe her to be stage 4. She gets her donepizel there.

Following initial diagnosis and meds by the neurologist and psychiatrist, the PC doctor handles things for us since then.

Thank you for all your comments. That was the way I felt, but I wanted to make sure I am doing right by him.
