A couple of new resources I just became aware of...

...you might find them helpful too.

First, I've been very much enjoying the podcast, Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver, of which I became aware of when they booked me for a interview - hasn't aired yet, but a couple of weeks ago they interviewed Christina Keys, who I've known of in the caregiver space for awhile as a super advocate. If you live in the Vancouver, WA, Clark County area, her non-profit, Loving Them Forward is an amazing resource for tons of caregiver support in the area. Including a event called Caregiver Christmas which the sisters who host the podcast are going to duplicate this coming December in Virginia (and I'm going to volunteer for in Vancouver!)

If you do not live anywhere near the Vancouver, WA area, you should still check out the website as the resources that they found may also be in your area and you just never thought to check. Such as a place that provides free, gently used medical equipment, non-profit in-home companion organizations, food and meal program services. It's really, really cool! And some of that may be in your area too, you just didn't know to look for it. I didn't know a few miles away from me there was a place to get free medical equipment that we needed. Sheesh!

My next thing is the Benefits Check Up tool from the National Council on Aging. If your dementia person is in the early stages they could probably use this simple, helpful online tool themselves, or you can go through it with them or for them to see if there are any benefits/support nationally and in your area you might not know about. And the online process is supported by phone, you can talk to one of their counselors to navigate your way through applying for any benefits that you or your dementia person are eligible.

Punch dementia in the face every damn day, caregivers!
