I’m very new here but I need advice, My heart is completely shatter in pieces right now. I haven’t seen my dad in months due to the distance and he just called me accusing of leaving a window open so someone can rob him of valuables, before I could tell him that it was untrue he told me to never call him again and hung up on me. I am in tears and don’t know how to fully handle this as this behavior towards me is very new. Stepmom is there providing care for him but I cannot get through to her. I’m falling apart and heart broken, how am I supposed to handle this???

Getting a call like that must have been such a shock, I am sorry that happened to you. Changes can come out of the blue sometimes, it is the nature of the disease, and when we love someone there is always grief in their decline. Please do not think that it means your dad does not trust you, this is dementia talking and dementia is totally irrational and cannot be reasoned with. Is there another relative or friend you could reach out to that could check on your stepmom and dad? She probably has her hands full. I know it is cold comfort, but if your dad is angry at you (you being at a distance), he might not be as angry at your stepmom, who would normally take the brunt of it.
