Hello all

I’m new to this group but not new to this disease.

What medication does your loved one take to help with sun downing? Mom was in the hospital for a week with a uti. They put her on seroquel. We had her moved to a rehab for pt. They continued the seroquel. Well it’s making her SO sleepy all the time even on the lowest dose that she can’t even do the pt. We had them stop it, last night was the first night without it hopefully she made it through the night with no issues.

What medication does your loved one use for it where they aren’t doped up and sleeping all the time?

    Hi and Welcome.

The rehab/nursing home where my mother lives uses Melatonin to help with sun downing. I hope that things go well for your mother and you. Hopefully they find something that helps without keeping her over medicated.

Thank you. We will be getting her out of the rehab soon. Going to get home health caregivers to give us a hand then go from there. I do believe they are giving her melatonin now and should be off seroquel by tomorrow. She is so much more alert now!

thank you again for the advice. I’m sure I will be posting with many more questions

My mom takes Seroquel. At first it does make one very sleepy, but eventually her body adjusted. She has taken it for several years, and we've had to up the dosage several times. But for her it's the only thing that has worked for sundowning. She still has episodes, but not as frequently or intensely as she did prior to the Seroquel.

She also takes melatonin for sleep, but I don't think that helps her much.

My mom is at home, but I also give her Melatonin late in the evening. It helps with Sundowning somewhat. Not a total fix for her, but it relaxes her enough so she doesn't totally drive me crazy.
