Getting Up and sleeping More
Hi, my mum has alzheimers, was daignosed 3 years ago roughly. I have posted in my mum and dad before.
When we eat now she gets up literally every 30 seconds and wanders about and my dad says she does the same at night, its driving him mad. She also sleeps a lot during the day which would explain the walking at night.
Any tips for dealing with either?
The co-ordinator also mentioned respite but we have to pay but i do think this would be a good idea for dad and I who both live with her.

This behavior is likely due to anxiety and may benefit from medication. Is your mum on any mood medication?

Sleep fragmentation at night is also part of the disease and may respond to medication-low doses of Seroquel completely fixed it for my partner.

Depending on your location, there may be respite options available at no charge. In the U.S., Age Options or the Area Agency on Aging can help identify respite programs (may be only 30 days per year, 6/hours a day) but that is helpful. Medicare also includes 30 days of respite care annually, I believe. It can be in home or in a memory care facility for secure floor and supervision. We have used both. When your LO is a veteran, the VA also provides a certain number of respite care days annually. It sounds like your dad especially, really needs a break.

BW: once a PWD is on Hospice, Medicare does cover respite care. I’m not aware of Medicare covering respite outside of Hospice - Mr. Google says the same on the Medicare Interactive site.
