Speaking of music ... music therapy

I saw this article on The Guardian (from the UK) today. I like it.

From the article:

Music therapy has been found to ameliorate symptoms of dementia, such as anxiety, apathy, depression and agitation. Its impact is similar to exercise in releasing endorphins, with recreational group singing in particular leading to clinically important improvements in depression, as well as neuropsychiatric symptoms and generic quality of life.

UK music projects aim to transform lives of people with dementia

I've certainly seen the benefits of music with my sister. Those '80s playlists, memory care karaoke, etc., have really helped her.

Great article. I've seen it in our home. Music soothes him when he is anxious. It improves his mood. It gives us a way to connect. And he remembers so many lyrics. I have to smile when he belts out the "jai guru deva" part of Across the Universe.

I was visiting my mom today. Hospice had contacted me this morning to tell me that had started giving her morphine for pain. She was not terribly responsive while I was there. After talking to her and trying to get her to eat, I said "Would you like to listen to Charlie?" I.e., Charlie Pride and country tunes. She got a huge grin. Her first response. The aids were like "Wow! Look at that!" I blasted Charlie's hits on the wi-fi speaker and she actually started singing a little.
