My diagnosis

I was recently diagnosed with Alzheimers . I know that every one is different but any information you could give me would help myself and my wife to deal with my diagnosis. Please any advice will be helpful. Right now my mind is just racing and I don't know how to handle it.

Welcome to our online support group, Barrsalem. I'm sorry to learn of your diagnosis. Although there is yet no cure, there are steps you can take to make your journey easier. Everyone progresses at his or her own rate. Did the neurologist offer you any medication? How are you managing now?

I'm also a newcomer to this adventure. I've put off thinking about it for a while now. But, suddenly, it hit me like a ton of bricks. So, I believe I know how you might be feeling. So, please, feel free to talk to me about it.

I'm not sure I've realized what my Dx means. I can (from time to time) find myself doing or saying something that is consist with the Dx of ALZ. I want to apologize for ALZ.

HI All, so glad this site is available to communicate feelings and see how other people are managing! I had a history of MCI so was not surprised by my recent ALZ diagnosis! It is still a lot to digest. Almost 2 years ago I moved from Arizona to northern CA! Because of memory issues I moved in with my son and family! They are very good to me but I have not made any friends and am feeling lonely! Has anyone else dealt with this situation?

Welcome Judy. You are among cyber-friends here. I hope that all of you will continue to post and to share and to support each other. I have a diagnosis of cognitive impairment not otherwise specified and I have been a member since 2009. Are you on memory medications?

Hi, all.

The Alz. website is a great place to look for information. I am a member of the national organization's Early Stage Advisory Group, and we have spent a lot of time this year talking to the team responsible for the website, with an emphasis on making it more user friendly. The process is ongoing.

Your family needs to understand that social interaction is an important part of slowing the progression of the disease. Check the social interaction section of the ALZ website. A lot of libraries host memory cafe's that get you out and let meet people with similar issues. Most importantly, look for a support group with others in the same situation. They are out there, but you may have to search.

Hello Thomas, thanks for getting back to me! I will go onto the ALZ site and see if there is Cafe near Folsom, it would be lovely to have people in person to spend a little time with! Yes I am a member of an Early Stage Group on line and it is wonderful , we have been together for over a year and and know one another as much as possible in that way! We have a great facilitator and we all look forward to our meeting days!!! If you are on the committee for the on line meetings give them my thanks! Judy

Yes Iris, I have been on medication since my MCI diagnosis a few years ago! I had a lumbar puncture to establish my diagnosis as I felt I was losing ground! I now know that it is OK to acknowledge there are things that I need help with and it is ok to say I need help! It has been difficult for me to give up my independence!

Has anyone else been going through this situation?
