As good as it gets!

A few days ago my DIL (whose mother is in hospice care for Alzheimer’s) texted me to see how my DH is doing with his Alzheimer’s). I responded with a list of his issues such as incontinence and repetition of questions. She texted back saying UNFORTUNATELY THAT IS PROBABLY AS GOOD AS IT IS GOING TO GET FOR MY DH.
The rest of the day as I found myself irritated or wishing things were better, her statement kept running through my mind. Surprisingly, it calmed me and I was less stressed. I’m thankful she said what she did to me. These little steps leading to complete acceptance are mind boggling. Yes, as good as it gets!

Hello Whyzit2,
Adjusting, navigating and grieving along the way have become an integral way of being for me over my short walk with my LO.
Sadly glad that the comment from your DIL allowed you to step into a new space of acceptance.
Wishing you every joy you can find and ease along the journey.

Someone posted something similar a while ago and it has stuck with me. When I find myself getting frustrated, I remind myself to appreciate hearing his voice even if he’s s repeating a comment for the 5th or 6th time. To appreciate that he can still shower on his own even if I do have to prod him. Knowing that I miss things that have disappeared and to be alert to what he can still do. I’m trying to shift my perspective from studying the symptoms and determining if he has advanced through the stages to looking at what abilities he still has and to be grateful for those abilities.
