New to the group

Hi, I'm Megan and I'm new to the group. I'm dad has been diagnosed with dementia and I believe that my mom has it also but hasn't been diagnosed yet. She is so stressed and I don't think that they're understanding what the dr's are saying but my dad (and his pride) doesn't want to tell anyone and my mom allowed me to finally go to a dr appointment but seemed to get annoyed by it. I'm overwhelmed and don't know where to start. Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Megan and welcome. So sorry you are facing this. If you haven't already done so, your first order of business should be to see a certified elder law attorney (CELA) to get power of attorney for both of your parents for finances and healthcare decisions; you will need this, and you may have to make decisions for their safety that they don't willingly accept. A CELA can also help you assess their finances, which may be important regarding future need for assisted living or memory care. You can find CELA s listed by location at nelf.org.

Your dad probably has anosognosia, which means that he truly thinks he's fine and can't recognize his deficits.

You have come to a very good place for learning and support; read a lot of threads and it will help. Im sure others will chime in.
