Delusions without memory loss?

Hello ALZ Community-My mom has been having delusional thinking and believes she is being tracked/under surveillance since about 2019. She believes “people” are turning her family and friends against her. She believes family members have put things in her food. The challenge is her memory is better than mine, is it early dementia? Wondering if anyone here has had this experience with a loved one where they have delusions but memory is fully intact?

I would bring her to a psychiatrist for evaluation. A lot of psychiatrists do telehealth appointments. If her memory is good it might not be dementia. There is something called delusional disorder that can cause paranoia. It can occur in the elderly and is treated with antipsychotic medication.

Gigi74, welcome to the forum. If she has not had a through physical workup in the last couple of years, she needs one. Make sure you write a note to the doctor detailing your observations. From there you need to go to a neurologist or geriatric psychiatrist. And yes, some dementias can start with behavioral problems/delusional thinking before noticeable memory issues.

Welcome...glad you reached out to us.

Sounds like you have no diagnosis. Diagnosis is imperative and there is a protocol to follow. Please google to learn about the procedure.

I hope you will return and update us.
