Types of Interventions that Can Help

This is a useful article about types of non-pharmacological treatments for Alzheimer's disease that can help:

"Addressing the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia can include options other than medically based pharmacological interventions. Scales et al., (2017) identified multiple sensory and psychosocial strategies that are within occupational therapy’s scope of practice to address the behavioral and psychological symptoms that are seen with dementia. With regard to sensory strategies, moderate evidence was found for the effectiveness of aromatherapy such as the use of lavender and lemon via diffusion to include calm and positive affect. Bright light therapy was found to be effective with synchronizing circadian rhythms and light-dark cycles. Multisensory stimulation using a combination of light effects, calming sounds, smells, and/or tactile stimulation was found effective with increasing engagement or to calming an individual. With regard to psychosocial strategies, moderate evidence pointed to the effectiveness of Reminiscence and music therapies, and provision of meaningful activities."

The article also provides a number of useful tips in terms of assisting individuals with Alzheimer's disease in terms of activities of daily living (dressing, eating, toileting, etc.).

Thanks for posting Lane. I find it interesting that the modalities and interventions suggested are the same that have been utilized and recommended by the experienced members here for many years. Finally the professionals are catching up.
