For those of you following along with my life:

Mom was getting better from her Dec 4th fall that fractured her ribs. Right up until Jan 12 when she fell again and annoyed those same ribs. No hospital visit this time. Last time she fell out of bed. This time she fell just after getting out of bed. Staff said her rollator walker moved on her. Mom said she was standing next to it and fell sideways. I chatted with the office manager and director, went to physical therapy, and bought my parents’ groceries. By the time I got back, the staff (unasked) had removed the frame of her bed and put the thick mattress/ box springs on the floor. Her feet can touch the floor when she sits up. I love the staff.

Mom is definitely losing her words - more hesitation struggling to complete a sentence, using the wrong word - thyroid rather than ribs for example. She’s also not keeping track of time. Depending on the phone call: She either thinks I’ve been gone forever or haven’t left - I’ve actually been gone 3 days. She told my son she hasn’t talked to me for several days -I actually called her this morning.

Step-dad says the pain in his side has gone away. So maybe it was a pulled muscle and not ‘something that shouldn’t be there’. Regardless, his annual CT scan to check the thyroid cancer nodules in his lungs is in February.

My last scheduled PT session for my knee replacement was Wednesday. Spouse and I headed south that afternoon. I have good range of motion, but I have to pay attention to how I walk to keep myself from limping. Heel/toe rather than flat-footed( which I tend to do). We hope to be gone for a month- but are prepared for a phone call that changes that.

Lots going on, QBC--I'm glad you're taking your chance to get away. So glad that you have a pro-active and caring facility, which should help ease your mind some.

Maybe the fall has brought out some new behaviors that will recede a bit over the next few weeks--with my mom it seems like health issues provide a preview into how her progression will play out.

Good luck with minding your steps! 😃

Those rollators can roll. I try to remember to put on the breaks. Also to remember not to use them for support when getting up or down. The old fashioned hospital walker is best for that.

    Safe traveling...
