Income After Being in a Home

Good evening everyone,

My mom had been receiving retirement income monthly from SSA prior to being in a home. What happens now that she is in one? Can I use her future deposits for a prepaid funeral? Does it just keep depositing into her bank? Does it stop?

An update:

The home told us no family visits for a couple of weeks to help with adjustment, everyone has understood. Had my first care plan meeting with the home and they said she’s doing really well and went over their daily schedule for my mom. I can’t remember the last time I’ve felt this overpowering amount of relief

Her social security should continue to be deposited to her bank (assuming it's on direct deposit). You can continue to use it to cover her expenses, assuming you have access to the bank account. If you need to move it, you have to be designated her representative payee-thats not something we've had to do, but others have posted about it.

Hi Gigi. If your mom is paying privately and you have no expectation of her ever being on Medicaid, you can use that money in any way for her benefit. If you do think she might be on Medicaid at some point you might be limited on her much you can prepay on a funeral and how you can do that. If she is on Medicaid in a nursing home now, all of that money needs to go to paying the facility except for a very small amount, the nursing home can tell you how much.
