Stopped Aricept

So, last week my DH stopped taking his Aricept. He had been on it since July and it made such a difference for him. He got it in his head he wanted to stop it, he does not want to try anything else. So I am dreading the slide backward. With Aricept, the repetive questions stopped, his short term memory improved along with his mood. He has been without it for 5 days, and his short term memory is slipping, not back to where he was in July, but it is noticeable. I don’t know how long it takes, but it makes me sad.

I'm sorry, Katielu. I hope he doesn't slip more than he already has.

I’m sorry to hear that he stopped it when it was helping him. Did he say why he didn’t want to take it anymore? Maybe in a week or two he’ll forget why he wanted to stop taking it and you can reintroduce it. Namenda has been effective for my husband. Maybe his doctor will prescribe that and he would agree to take it.

I don't think the meds ever helped my wife and the side effects were terrible. She hasn't taken anything in over 3 years. Since the meds is helping your love one, I'd talk to his doctor and see if you can crush it into his food? To me your husband probably isn't capable of making the right decision.

You are all correct, he can’t make the decision, but he was a high functioning physician assistant for years. He looks at every pull he takes to make sure he it is not something new. He had bad side effects with Namenda and has said no to the patch. He thinks he is doing fine and doesn’t want to try anything. If it affected his health, I would have the battle, it will affect my mental health, he will just go back to how he was… very sad but it all is sad.
