Hello All

Hospice has been helping my dad in AL for a few months now. They gave him the diagnosis of senile degeneration of the brain. Anyone hear of that or can you explain what that is? I know it is what it is, but just curious is this a form of dementia?

I find so much help here, thank you to everyone!

    Hi,

You are lucky your father has hospice. I tried to get my dad on, but he was too alert when they came to interview him. Basically, I have been told that he would have to be on death's door unless he has a physical ailment also. I am going to ask his doctor about this diagnosis and if that would help get him on hospice. My father also has aortic stenosis so that might help him get some hospice care.

@LauraAnn, "senile degeneration of the brain" is just a longwinded way of saying dementia. It's pretty nonspecific and doesn't really tell you much. Statistically, the most likely thing he has would be a combination of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia (that's what most people have). But as you say, it probably doesn't matter a whole lot at this point. I hope hospice is helping him and keeping him comfortable.
