Hello I'm new here. This is my first post. I'm currently my Mom's caregiver. She was diagnosed approximately 2.5 years with mild Alzheimer's. She is now moderate to more severe stage. She progressed extremely quickly. She was living at her home alone 2 years ago and now she is bedridden. About 9 weeks she simply quit walking. There is nothing physically wrong according to 2 hospitals. She was admitted for 18 days. That was a horrible experience and instead of helping her they made things worse. They stated due to her behavior she could not go to rehab. Memory care is out because she no longer walks. I was told my only option was to bring her home. I do love having her but she does severe behavior. I'm terminal ill and I simply cannot continue to do this. I love my Mom so much but I desperately need help. Please let me know any suggestions you may have. Thank you in advance. ❤️

Hello and welcome. I'm sorry you and your mom are going through this. I'm hoping someone with MC experience will be along to chime in, but at the memory care facilities I've toured, they were able to manage patients in wheelchairs. I have a few recommendations for you to contact. First, I would start with the Alzheimer's Association helpline (800.272.3900) and ask for a care consultant. Second, reach out to your local council on aging as they may be able to point you toward local services. Another thing to consider is having your mom evaluated by hospice. At this stage of the disease, they may be able to provide a lot of help. Strength to you, friend. You have so much on your plate and I know you're working to do the best for your mom.

Hi and welcome. I am sorry for your reason to be here but pleased you found this place.

This is a very difficult situation and I agree that reaching out to the 800 number would be a great starting point.

IME touring MCFs, while they would allow a PWD to age-in-place, they required residents to be ambulatory and self-feeding on admission. None I toured allowed wheelchairs at the time of admission but my aunt's MCF outside of Boston would consider wheelchair users on a case-by-case basis accepting those folks who could move around independently once transferred. My aunt had a stroke right before her admission but could sort of propel herself using her feet.

You may need to consider a skilled nursing facility or hospice facility if she's bedridden at this point.
