Day Center Services

Hello! First time poster here. Looking for assistance on how to find someplace my mom can take my dad for a few hours a day. I work full time and I’m trying to convince her that he’s just too much for her to watch all day. (He’s a wanderer.) All I can find are living options and for now he’s still ok at home. She just needs a little break until I get there. Thank you!!

Your Area Agency on Aging may have some options near you. Some hospital outreach departments will know of places as well.

Also call the Helpline (1-800-272-3900) and ask to speak with a Care Consultant who may have access to more local resources.

We had great luck with a very affordable day program through Easterseals.

A day program was amazing for our family. Mom with Alzheimers started a couple half days a week and then went to 5 full days a week. It was respite for us caregivers and entertainment and socialization for her at a level she could handle. The benefits to mom were a pleasant surprise and in hindsight the best part of it; she had needed outlets in a controlled setting where she could get what she needed socially. Getting someone started in such a program can be bumpy and the PWD often resists in the beginning. We called it "volunteering" at the senior center and eventually she took to it and thought she worked there but the first month was awful to get her to go. Then she got used to it and really came to enjoy it. The Alz help line may be able to direct you to local programs (1-800-272-3900) or your local Agency or Council on Aging. Most counties have such an agency. Or just try google. Good luck!
