Help- day centers? tips and tricks?

Hi! I’m new here and my mom was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This is all overwhelming for us and I need help. Does anyone know of adult day care centers or how I can find them? Does anyone have any advice on what financial help is available? Also, any tips on living with a parent with Alzheimer’s?

She has paranoia and always wants to be outside, wandering and talking to strangers.

Hi Worriedgal - welcome to 'here', but sorry for the reason.

Is mom living alone? Wandering and talking to strangers, and hope she isn't talking to scam callers. Paranoia is not unusual. If she is agitated, check with her doc for any meds for that. there are meds that can calm them down without becoming zombied.

You can check on-line for adult daycares and definitely check out their reviews.

Does someone have DPOA? That is very important. If not, you should speak to a CLEC (elder special attorney). And medical HIPPA access - MIL has medical proxy written into the DPOA, which was a great help.

tips... Don't argue with someone with dementia. DO take care of yourself. Do browse the forum for a lot of information (and commiseration).

@Worriedgal You can call the ALZ helpline here at 800-272-3900 and ask to speak to a Care Consultant. They are licensed and dementia trained Social Workers to assist in navigating, finding resources and just have a "live" person to speak to.

your local council on aging should also have a list of day care centers in your area. A lot of memory care facilities will also run day programs, it's worth calling around to ask.

Paranoia can be treated somewhat with medications, have you discussed this with her doctors?

All the other advice about getting your legal affairs in order sooner rather than later is also spot on. Good luck, and welcome to the forum but sorry you need it. It's a good place.
