Long distance care

Hello Everyone,

I am thankful there is a place for help. I lost my mom 14 years ago to this disease and know the stress first hand. Now, it is my father who lives in Florida and my sisters are both there. One lives on the same street not the other. My father's wife is in the hospital and was removed by her daughter's children without his permission. My Dad is 90 years old fragile, there is a will which we are not sure is valid. I am doing all at a long distance to tell my sister to get some help ASAP and I have suggested this arena. There is more but for now, I am glad we can help each other.

    Hi Delmar, welcome to this place but sorry you and yours find the need. This is a fabulous help for most of us here.

    I just want to say that this particular group, Caring Long Distance, doesn’t get as much traffic as some others. I’m A Caregiver ( general) and Caring for a Parent may get you quicker responses going forward.

    Your father, and your mother, are/were so fortunate to have their daughters working together and caring for them.

    Thank you so much. It is such a peace of mind when families can work together so many can fall apart. My sisters and I are doing all we can with our Dad. Many blessings.

    I understand this group doesn't get a lot of traffic, but I'll share my long-distance story just to say hi to the community! Our family is far-flung, with me in California, my brother in Florida, and my dad with dementia in AL in New York. He has a wonderful lady friend who has been devoted to his care, but she plans to move away, closer to her children, within the year. He also has a personal aide who comes in a couple times each week. Maybe some of our earlier decisions were short sighted -- don't get me started on the feelings of guilt and inadequacy -- but it would be cruel to try moving him now. I am his POA and health care proxy, go there at least 2x/year, and keep in close touch with his caregivers and doctors. It's workable but very hard. One of the best things is that we have a weekly zoom call so I can see and hear him, and I totally recommend that for any long distance family. Anyway, all good wishes to you, and hang in there with your loved one as best you can.

    I am glad I found this forum. I am an adult daughter caring for my father with FTD from a distance. My sibling in another state will not help at all. It is amazing how much strain caring for an elderly parent with early FTD can strain the entire family.

Commonly Used Abbreviations

DW= Dear Wife, Darling Wife
LO = Loved One
ES = Early Stage
EO = Early Onset
FTD = Frontotemporal Dementia
