Please look into elder services in your area. Area agency of aging is what it’s called in my state, it may be something different in yours. However social services will be able to direct. There is help for you out there. My prayers are you find it and get some relief.

    Reda,

I hope you find relief and I’m so sorry you and your mom are going through it. any stay in a hospital or rehab can definitely set someone back and accelerate dementia. Also they have a hotline here, free, which is excellent +800.272.3900. I called two or three times when I was in the thick of it with my mom. if she is bed bound definitely ask about in home services. You should be able to find help regardless of your financial situation. This is a good place to read and learn and vent.

Hi Reda. Have you asked for a hospice evaluation? She will qualify if bedbound and they can be a lot of help. You don't need a doctor's order, you can just call a hospice agency yourself and they will come assess her.

Hi and welcome but sorry you need this forum. I think this place is the best to get real practical and emotional help.

Calling on hospice for a dementia patient does not necessarily mean end of life is within 6 mos as with other terminal illnesses such as cancer. If she’s admitted they will provide much support to both of you. You’ll get a team that will come to your home and provide nursing care and assessment, hygiene care from a CNA usually weekly, a doctor, meds, equipment (hospital beds are so helpful with changing a patient in bed, etc), supplies, a social worker, and if you’d like clergy, music therapy and/or a volunteer to come give you respite a few hours a week. It’s well worth a try and many on this forum have had hospice on board at home or in a facility for months and even years for their LO with dementia. We had it for almost two years at home. Give them a call and get an evaluation. You can always discharged them if you want more medical treatment than comfort care.

You need a break or you’ll be no good to your mom. Maybe hire in help for some time off during the week?

This is a very strenuous and tedious journey. I’m very sorry you are in the thick of it too. Keep coming back.

Please seek help. Your mother is eligible for hospice comfort care services of which takes place inside your home. I admitted my mother a few weeks ago, she has dementia. They will come out and assess your mother’s health and determine how many days of services she will need. It is all covered by Medicare or Medicaid.

I just got my mother started in hospice. Please make sure the agency is on the Medicare list. I compared a few different agencies, the one I chose was rated best for dementia care.

I have been so relieved since I have made the decision. The nurse comes on Mondays, the aide comes on Weds., the social worker is only a phone call away. I have met her and she is a wonderful listener. I have asked for a volunteer also.

    Sending many prayers your way.
